Counselling
PREMIER HOME CARE (SCOTLAND) LTD was originally established in October 2001 and is now widely recognised as not only one of the main providers of Home Care in Ayrshire, but also for its standards of excellence within this sector. From January 2006, with the launch of PHC Counselling Service it became the aim of our Company to now provide comparable standards within the specialised field of Counselling/Psychotherapy.
Mission Statement
We are committed to our counsellors/therapists always providing a high standard of practice and care, to which our clients are entitled. To achieve and maintain these standards our counsellors are required to: be professionally competent; foster good relationships with clients and colleagues; and be committed to observing professional ethics.
Statement of Aims and Principles
All of our therapists are members of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). As such, they agree with and always aim to adhere to BACP's "Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy". Some of the fundamental values underpinning this framework are:
- Respecting human rights and dignity
- Ensuring the integrity of practitioner-client relationships
- Alleviating personal distress and suffering
- Fostering a sense of self that is meaningful to the person(s) concerned
- Increasing personal effectiveness
- Enhancing the quality of relationships between people
- Appreciating the variety of human experience and culture
Such values inform the ethical principles, which govern how our therapists practice, in line with BACP guidelines. These principles are listed briefly as follows:
- FIDELITY: honouring the trust placed in the practitioner
- AUTONOMY: respect for the client's right to be self-governing
- BENEFICENCE: a commitment to promoting the client's well-being
- NON-MALEFICENCE: a commitment to avoiding harm to the client
- JUSTICE: the fair and impartial treatment of all clients and the provision of adequate services
- SELF-RESPECT: fostering the practitioner's self-knowledge and care of self; in effect applying all of the above principles as entitlements for the counsellor/therapist.
Counselling or Psychotherapy - is there a difference?
Counselling and psychotherapy both involve talking to someone who has been trained to listen and there is no definitive distinction between the two. However, in general terms, counselling allows individuals to deal with specific life issues and psychotherapy deals with "deeper" issues, often from the individuals past.
Extensive research has shown that the most important factor in the success of therapy is not the approach, but the quality of the relationship between the client and counsellor. This should be borne in mind when choosing your counsellor; a little understanding of the different approaches may also be helpful in making your choice.
Our counsellors are trained to provide both counselling and psychotherapy and different options can be discussed. Please note that therapy does not involve giving clients advice.
